Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is necessary for collagen synthesis and is a strong antioxidant. It’s involved in the enzymatic hydroxylation of proline to form 4-hydroxyproline, an amino acid that is an integral part of collagen and elastin.

Research on vitamin C shows that it may have important effects in reducing pain and inflammation secondary to exercise. In one study 400 mg daily of vitamin C reduced post exercise pain and inflammation. In another the use of vitamin C increased recovery from demanding exercise.

Vitamin E:

As well as being an antioxidant, vitamin E, has been demonstrated to reduce exercise induced muscle damage and muscle damage pain in arthritic patients.

Both vitamin C and E are important in treatment of arthritic conditions, as shown in studies, possibly by reducing oxidative stress induced by TNF-. And both of these vitamins are also helpful in reducing muscle soreness secondary to exercise. Clinical studies report that supplementing with vitamin E and C reduces post-exercise inflammation and pain in muscles and joints.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D deficiency is fairly common, especially in the more Northern climates. Several studies have found a link between vitamin D deficiency and various disorders that have an inflammatory link. As well, studies have shown an association between vitamin D deficiency and inflammation in otherwise healthy people, and a decrease in inflammation with vitamin D supplementation.

Vitamin B:

Several clinical studies have shown the anti-inflammatory effects of niacinamide and its benefits in both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Pantothenate or vitamin B5 has been shown in several studies to influence wound healing and collagen synthesis. Some studies have also shown that low levels of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) are inversely related to increased joint pain and stiffness.

Several of the B vitamins target inflammation and in particular the pro-inflammatory cytokines including vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. Methylcobalamin, as well as other methyl group donors such as folic acid, betaine, methionine, with the aid of B6, have multiple functions in the body including increasing the formation of SAMe and the conversion of homocysteine (high levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease) to the essential amino acid methionine.

What Are EFAs?

There are two essential fatty acids that your body cannot make and you must therefore consume from your diet or supplements. These are alpha linoleic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6).

Alpha Linoleic Acid

Alpha-linoleic-acid (ALA) is naturally found in flax, hemp seed, canola, soybeans and walnuts. ALA is broken down biochemically to form (in this order, the 3 major ones are mentioned):

  • Stearidonic Acid (SDA) found in omega-3 rich soybean oil from GMO soy crops and naturally in black currant seeds.
  • Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) – see below
  • Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) – both EPA and DHA are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut, lake trout, sardines and anchovies.

Linoleic Acid

Linoleic Acid (LA) is naturally found in safflower, sunflower, hemp, soybean, walnut, pumpkin, sesame and flax. After digestion, it is broken down biochemically to form (2 of the more commonly heard of ones mentioned):

  • Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) – found naturally in borage oil, black currant seed oil, and evening primrose oil.
  • Arachidonic Acid (AA) – found in meat and other animal products.

What Do Efas Do?

That’s one loaded question. Omega-6 fatty acids have gotten a bad rap lately. But, they are absolutely essential for our health. The problem is, with our typical American diet, loaded in oils, many of us are getting too many omega-6s and too few omega-3s. But, the guy or gal on a virtually fat free diet will notice symptoms of both omega-6 and omega-3 deficiency.

Both omega-6s and omega-3s play crucial roles throughout our body including: growth and development, brain functioning, skin health, hair growth, metabolism, reproductive system health and cell membrane integrity.

Here’s where things get tricky though, some omega-6 fatty acids may promote inflammation whereas others may be beneficial for taming inflammation (GLA for instance). And, omega-3s are considered anti-inflammatory. And, specific omega-3s, namely EPA and DHA, are great for heart health whereas there is less research on ALA (though ALA is still considered beneficial for heart health).

We only need about 3-6 grams of linoleic acid to prevent signs of deficiency.

It is possible, that we may need more for optimal health, especially certain individuals depending on their state of health and diet intake.

The future of our health may involve manipulating our LA and ALA intake on an individual basis to promote health and minimize the likelihood of certain disease or health conditions. Right now, however, we are left with looking at our diet, trying to find out what is missing, and choosing the right foods to make up for the shortfall or supplementing accordingly.

Do you avoid oils and food made with oils? You may be low in omega-6s. If you don’t eat fish or consume sources of ALA, you are likely low in omega-3s.

Studies suggest that the polyphenols in green tea can help reduce and prevent rheumatoid arthritis. One study found that regular tea drinkers reported to have stronger bones and were less likely to develop arthritis. Those who drank tea regularly for 10 years or more had higher bone mineral density in their spines than non-tea drinkers.

When you sit down to pump iron, you want to see results as fast as you can to get the look you want as well as the physical stamina you need for other athletic activities you take part in like bicycling or team sports. Trying to do this can seem a bit difficult because just pumping weight on its own won’t necessarily give you the results you want. The body and its muscles are very complex so to maximize results for certain areas of the body, you’ll need to do as much research on the type of exercises work best for each region. Simply putting on extra plates is just simply not going to do. Here are a bodybuilding tips to help you get started in moving towards the body you want.

One of the strangest ideas you might hear if you are new to weight training is this – don’t train every day. You may at first think this is just good advance to keep you from getting exhausted, but it’s not. You’ll actually see better results if you don’t lift weight every day. Muscle actually grows when you are not lifting weights, so you need a day between weight training equipment sessions to let the muscle grow. Now, this might mean that you train your legs three days a week and the upper body the other three days; it works just as long as you are targeting the same group every day.

Next, another odd sounding tip – run. That’s right, do aerobic exercises in addition to using your weight lifting equipment. This is great for the off days you reserve for muscle growth. These exercises don’t necessarily train muscles, but they do train your body’s ability to control its resources and breathing. With stronger longs and a more responsive system, you’ll find that you’re doing better lifting weights for longer periods and breathing better while you do so.

Consider the smaller muscles. Most people who weight train seriously are just looking for bulk. For beginners, it seems like this means working hard on your Pecs and shoulder muscles, but this isn’t the case. Instead while it’s important to work these large muscles, it’s also necessary to work the smaller muscle groups on your body. By doing, so you actually give your larger groups more strength and balance. Additionally, you’ll get a much better look as your body will look fully toned and you’ll find even these tiny muscles are standing out.
